M-O-T-H-E-R

I gotta admit, one of my favorite days of the whole year is Mother's Day. It's nice to take a day to stop and think about moms. Generally speaking, moms are under-appreciated, underrated, undervalued, overworked, and overlooked. Being a mom is hard. It's messy. It's full of ups and downs, and more often than not, more downs than ups-- and that's just in the first 10 minutes of being awake some mornings! I appreciate a day to stop and think about not only my mom, but also MY role as a wife and mother and how it is truly a joy...even if it is messy.
I think as the years go by, I appreciate my mom more and more. All of those little things you take for granted growing up-- most of the time not even thinking about how or when or where she found the energy to do it--like dinner on the table exactly at 6 p.m. every night, or clean clothes folded and put away. I know from personal experience that being a mom has refined me, more than I have refined or bettered my family. I'm so grateful Heavenly Father has allowed me to be a mother! Those first five or so years of a child's life are so precious-- and they go by SO fast. To be able to spend that time with them--doing something nobody else can, and watching them grow and develop, before teachers and school and friends and society enter into the picture is truly humbling.
Jon and the kids prepared me a delicious breakfast including quiche, fruit tart, muffins, and orange juice. Wowsa!
Zach nabbed the blueberry muffin, then thought about it for a second, and at great personal sacrifice asked me if I wanted the blueberry muffin, since there was just one of them. Ha ha. I told him I was just fine with the cinnamon one!
My kids always shower me with cute cards and crafts they've made at school. Zach's card said, "I love my mom because you take me to the ice cream store," which he sounded out and wrote all by himself. Look how nice his writing is!
It's kind of a tradition now to get a picture with the kids before church. Am I lucky, or what??

The only downer of the day was checking the weather in Parker, CO, where we're moving to in a month and seeing THIS horrendous weather report. Waaaahh!! I don't do snow, period, let alone snow well into May. I hope they have cheap flights to Hawaii....
At least Jon had the foresight to buy us some cupcakes for dessert! HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to our own mothers and grandmothers, and to all the inspirational moms out there!
