Twas the Week Before Christmas!

I loved how the kids had a full week of no school before Christmas-- it gave us plenty of time to relax and enjoy this time of year, as well as sneak a few more fun activities in. In case you missed it,  here is our family Christmas card for 2016:

My sister Whitney surprised us by deciding to fly in to Denver last minute for the weekend because she'd found some pretty cheap tickets, and we were thrilled to have her! We picked her up early on the morning of Friday the 16th at the airport and brought her home. She's been a busy little bee teaching school in Phoenix and was in pretty desperate need of a break.
Saturday morning we woke up to about 5 inches of new snow, and made egg nog pancakes and hot chocolate for breakfast. It felt just like Christmas! We spent the rest of the morning lounging in our PJs, and Whitney introduced me to the wonder (and perplexing cult following) that is Hallmark Christmas movies.
Jon had to work that day, so we met him after work in Castle Rock at Crave Burgers for dinner. I tried the Slopper-- which was an open face burger on top of a grilled cheese sandwich, smothered with green chili sauce, pico de gallo, and avocado. Their burgers are so unique, it was fun to take Whitney who is a burger aficionado.
Aren't they cute! Lucy has loved every single Auntie Whitney visit since time immemorial, way back when she was just a tiny babe in Philadelphia. We're so glad she decided to give up the 60 degree Phoenix weather to hang out with us in our snowy -9 degrees.
After our burger feast we hopped onto I-25 to cruise over to Larkspur to look at the drive-thru lights at Jellystone campground. Don't you think everyone looks thrilled??
Our favorite part is right at the end when you drive through the tunnel because the lights are all synchronized to the Christmas music on the radio station they give you. The kids totally rock out to Trans Siberian Orchestra and Mannheim Steamroller!
I love Christmas Sundays! I love getting pictures of them in their cute Christmas outfits-- and I wasn't sure if we'd have time to snap a picture the following week with the excitement of it being Christmas and all, and hindsight being 20/20 I'm glad we did.
Whitney flew back home to Phoenix late Sunday night, and the poor baby had to work a whole other week before her school let out for break on the 23rd.
Merry Christmas 2016
Jon had to work Monday through Thursday so he was busy, busy, busy. That meant lots of projects for me in an effort to keep the natives from getting restless. Lucy helped me make white chocolate covered popcorn to give to neighbors and friends on Tuesday and it turned out awesome!
Thursday afternoon Jon was finally done with work after their staff Christmas party, so we loaded up into the car and headed south to Colorado Springs. We stopped for dinner at Rudy's BBQ, which is a famous Texas barbecue chain-- for old time's sake, since we're really just relocated Southerners at heart. The atmosphere was JUST like the Pic N Pig back home, and it actually made me so homesick being there!
I got the brisket sandwich with coleslaw and it was pretty darn good! Tasted just like I remember it. Such a fun place to get dinner, as well as an unexpected trip down memory lane.
We then headed over to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for the Electric Safari. Let me just say how much I love this zoo! I'm so glad we bought a pass.
We got to check out some of the indoor animal habitats, like where the giraffes get away from the cold and wind, and the kids loved petting them and seeing their signature blue tongues.
There just happened to be a North Pole where Santa was hanging out (by the reindeer exhibit, of course) so we absolutely had to do that. You can't meet Santa too many times in one month, right?
Once again, Lizzie was very fascinated by his long beard and glasses, but just as content as can be to sit there on his lap.
The zoo was gorgeous! Of course since it's already located on the mountainside you got a great view of Colorado Springs lit up at night down below, as well as all the lights the zoo had put out.
We decided to pay a little extra for tickets to ride the skylift up to the top of the mountain. I rode with Lucy and Leah, and although very cold it was so beautiful!
Jon rode with Zach and Lizzie-- I didn't trust myself to hang on to the baby if she got cranky and started flailing because she is so slippery all bundled up in her coat and blankets! Thankfully, no incidences on the skylift.
Beautiful view of Colorado Springs and the Electric Safari down below. Honestly I was really reluctant to go and was dragging my feet the whole time before we got there-- it was supposed to be very cold, the kids had been wearing me out all week, I had about 200 presents left to wrap, food to prepare, etc etc etc, but thanks to Jon for reminding me that we only have a few more years to make memories like these before they grow up and always want to be going with friends and doing their own thing. I'm so glad we went! It was such a special trip-- it just felt magical with all the lights, and there weren't very many other people, and with everything that happened later on with Lizzie in the hospital, it definitely stands out as probably my favorite memory of Christmas this year.
Friday afternoon we took Lucy and Zach to see Rogue One-- the new Star Wars movie at the theater by our house. Lucy really enjoyed it, but Zach wasn't so sure about it. I think the plot was a little complicated for him to follow, and **SPOILER ALERT** he was really disappointed everyone basically dies at the end. We got back home, got the kids ready for bed and were all set for the Christmas Express Train early the next morning, when everything got sort of turned upside down on us and Jon headed to the ER in Parker to get Lizzie sorted out....

Dash Through December!

Official Christmas Countdown (in case you needed to know): Only 10 days left!!!! "Where has December gone?!?," you may be asking yourself. Well, same here!
December started out with a bang when we celebrated Lucy's birthday (see post), and sadly, Jon bid a fond farewell to his '98 Toyota Corolla. It was peacefully laid to rest (aka donated to) the Make a Wish foundation, and will hopefully serve us one last time by giving us a nice little tax deduction.
I met Jon shortly after he inherited this car after his mission, twelve long years ago. Since then it earned quite a loyal history within our family-- from our first date in Provo, to driving out to Philadelphia, to bringing Lucy home from the hospital, then Nevada to North Carolina, and of course faithfully driving Jon the 80 miles roundtrip to Pope AFB day after day for FOUR long years. When all was said and done there were almost 250,000 miles on it, and I honestly can't remember even one significant repair we had to make. This car was one in a million. It just wouldn't be right not to include its loss on the family blog. Be well, little Corolla, you served us well....
My mom took this classy Christmas picture on Lucy's birthday, right after church. Love that my kids are always just so "them" even in our pictures!
My Christmas present also arrived that weekend in the form of a new kitchen table. I'd bought the last one at a RC Willey Clearance Center when we lived in Las Vegas six years ago, for about $300 and it was on its last leg-- literally. This one seats 8, so although we're not anticipating any new arrivals (like, EVER) it'll be nice to have some extra seats for guests!
As promised, December has been full of concerts and recitals and Christmas cheer. Lucy has been participating in choir so far this year, which is held Friday mornings at 7:15 a.m. Unsurprisingly, she LOVES it. There she is, top left corner.
Jon worked that night so it was just me wrangling 3 kids in the back row, but all in all they did pretty good. The choir sang some fun Christmas songs I'd never even heard before, and getting to perform just solidified Lucy's love for music even more.
That weekend we had a girl's date planned to have Yule Tea down in Colorado Springs at the Glen Eyrie Castle. It was gorgeous sunny day with blue skies and a little bit of snow left on the ground from a previous storm, and the setting was just beautiful!
Our date included Aunt Kylene and Sophie, so it was pretty special. I decided not to bring Leah again because as fun as it is, the service between courses is so sloooooow, and I didn't want her to get bored halfway through and have another Lizzie-Monster-Baby experience like last fall!
I am secretly hatching a plan where Jon and I can come stay the night alone in the castle, as it doubles as a hotel too...
These two were in heaven! The halls of the castle were decked in boughs of holly and Christmas trees, carols were playing in the background, and the tea and various edibles were top-notch!
Our yummy sandwich course: Island pork on cheddar biscuits, bleu cheese and chive quiches, cucumber and prosciutto on crackers, and smoked turkey with cranberry cream cheese triangles.
The pies de resistance was definitely dessert. There was audible "oohing" and "ahhing" when it was brought out: Gingerbread scones with maple glaze, pistachio and dried cherry cookies, peppermint fudge, and cranberry teacakes. Seriously yummy!
A picture with everyone before we drove back home. I'd had a CPR renewal course earlier that morning for work, so Jon was literally at home with the kids all day. He was such a good sport to let Lucy and I spend some one-on-one time together!
I was really wanting some Santa pictures, as this is Lizzie's first Christmas, so like last year we showed up for Kneader's Breakfast with Santa night, pumped up and ready to meet the big guy! It was from 5-7, and Lucy's choir concert was also that night from 6-7, so I thought it'd be no big deal to squeeze it in especially if we got there at like 4:45 p.m. and were ready and waiting. Well, we got there-- and Santa was a no-show until 5:30!!! And by that time there was literally 25 kids waiting, ready to pounce, and I'd had it. How is Santa 30 minutes late?!? We left without meeting him at all. Long story short, I discovered Plan B called "Steaks with Santa" at Texas Roadhouse the very next week and it was way better anyway.
We got there about 4:45 p.m. to beat any rush and there was no line at all. The kids all got to tell him what they wanted, and I didn't have to cook dinner. Brilliant!
Leah is at THE perfect age for Christmas magic right now.  She just adores Santa. I mean, look at that blissful little face and sweet cuddle she is giving him!
Lizzie was not so sure. I couldn't tear her attention away from him long enough to snap a picture with a smile, but she wasn't crying, so that's a win in my book!
I got to attend Lucy's classroom holiday party the next afternoon. They made crafts, sang carols, frosted sugar cookies, and each exchanged Secret Santa gifts with someone else. It was fun to check out what's been happening in 4th grade these days.
Last but not least, Leah had her preschool Christmas concert just this morning, and it was precious. They all walked out lined up and just thrilled as could be that they had an actual audience. I love their red Rudolph noses!
They sang "Rudolph" and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"--and you can bet that our little Shortcut knew every single word to each song. In fact she is quite the performer! Thankfully she is just slightly more cute than she is naughty, so we keep her around! *wink, wink*
Cute preschool cousins with their Rudolph noses and little antlers! I love that they get to attend together and feel like they've become such good friends because of it. And as of 3:30 p.m. this afternoon, our 2 1/2 week Christmas Break has officially begun!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Here's to a Decade of Fun!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEET LUCY!!! Can you believe this little baby has been around for 10 whole years??? Wow. It still feels not so long ago,  that I was not-so-patiently waiting in a hospital bed for the go-ahead from Dr. Meigs to induce me so I could meet our Philadelphia baby.
She came early on the morning of December 4th and my life has never been the same. She immediately brought so much JOY into our lives, and I never knew you could love such a tiny little person so much-- and be filled with so much worry and fear and hope every time you looked at that little face who was depending so wholly on you! Well, ten years have since flown by....
And here she is today! Lucy got to play hooky and skip school on Friday, so she could spend the day with Daddy hiking in the mountains. They decided to hike up around Nederland in the Rockies, and enjoy some Christmas snow!
Jon had it all planned out, from the picnic lunch, to the trail they'd hike, to getting Panda Express (Lucy's favorite) for dinner on the way home. He's such a great dad!
The hike was about 3 miles in the snow, and very, very cold. Jon was able to make hot chocolate for Lucy when they got to the halfway point, which I'm sure hit the spot!
Gorgeous! A winter wonderland. I love that they took selfies.
Jon was elated that he got to use his truck for some off-roading in order to get to the trailhead. Lucy was totally freaked out of course when she saw these signs, but Jon said his truck performed admirably. They got home Friday evening just in time for Lucy to go to open gym that night with her friend Collette at the Rec center. She was one tired girl that night!
Grandma Joanie had flown in Thursday morning to spend the weekend with the birthday girl, so Saturday morning we took Lucy to "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." She's a Harry Potter fangirl as you know, so I don't think she minded seeing it twice in one week. That evening she picked the Cheesecake Factory for her birthday dinner, and she even got her very own slice of Oreo cheesecake. Lucky!
Right after dinner we headed into downtown, to the Denver Zoo to see the "Zoo Lights" which is a yearly tradition where they decorate the entire zoo with Christmas lights. Traffic was brutal along I-25 (of course) so we were rushing to get there, but finally made it and despite the bitter cold, we had a great time!

They had a LOT of lights! It was beautiful.
Despite cold, tired kids we were able to get at least one nice family picture....
Until you zoom in on Lizzie's face and see it up close. It totally cracks me up!! Ha ha ha!! That little face just says to me, "It's cold. I'm bored. Get me outta here." Poor baby!
We met the cousins there which made it all the more fun! They loved wandering through all these thousands of lights together. This was the "BYU cougar" we found.
And the hippo tunnel which was their favorite. Leah had fallen asleep in the car on the way there, and was just cranky as could be, so she rode in the stroller and then ended up falling back asleep somewhere along the way.
Following in her mother's footsteps, Lucy's birthday WEEKEND finished on her actual birthday, December 4th, and commenced by opening presents early that morning. I even managed to snag some real butter beer at a specialty shop here in Parker. Yum!
She got lots of fun presents-- Roald Dahl books, two science kits, new clothes, an illustrated Harry Potter book, and a new bike which she'll get to pick out sometime this weekend. Spoiled rotten!
Here she is-- our resident fashionista in her new church clothes. I think TEN looks great on her!
That evening after church, she picked chicken pot pie for her special dinner, and this amazing chocolate Kit Kat cake for dessert. Get it, Luce!
The cousins came over to help us celebrate Lucy, and brought a fun birthday present. They also helped us eat all that yummy birthday cake and ice cream.
Singing Happy Birthday and blowing out the candles....
When I found out I was pregnant with Lucy, shortly after I went to the temple and while sitting there in the session I very, very clearly received the impression that this baby's name was to be Lucy. I had all kinds of other baby girl names picked out, but I knew it almost from day one that this was our Lucy.  The name Lucy actually  means "bringer of light"-- and that's just exactly what she does. She's brought so much light into our lives, and into a very dark, scary world.  She is wise and mature beyond her years, and so special to so many people. We LOVE you Lucy!
