Earthquakes, and Hurricanes, and Mosquitoes. Oh My!!

Well, it's been one adventure after another here in North Carolina with all that's been happening in the news lately PLUS being brand new to the area.

On Monday Lucy had her first full day of 4 year old preschool! She will have lots to remember about that day-- a crazy house filled with boxes, getting lost like 15 times on the way there even though it's only 5 miles away, and meeting her nice new teacher Mrs. Gerdes.
She goes to school at a Baptist Church that has some class rooms attached to the side of the building. As soon as we pulled up the first time she was like, "Wow! I go to church at a temple?!?" If anything, having her attend school with the Baptists has been a great invitation to explain a lot of things about our church and what we believe.
Monday evening we learned the hard way NOT to let the kids play with the Slip 'n Slide once the sun starts setting. They were both so excited to have an actual yard with grass that for FHE we let them play outside in the water again because it was so hot, and both ended up COVERED in mosquito bites. I don't think we even had mosquitos in Vegas, so I didn't even think twice about it. I think we counted 18 bites on Zach and just as many on Lucy. It looked like they had the chicken pox. So, lesson learned!
Tuesday afternoon we were sitting in the living room watching TV right after we'd picked Lucy up from preschool, and all of a sudden the house shook like a big gust of wind had hit it, or a train had gone by underneath. The couch started swaying side to side and Jon and I looked at each other like, "Are you feeling this?!?" Only to find out it WAS a real earthquake!! It didn't last very long, but long enough to be pretty freaky.
Wednesday was Jon's first day of work, and if it's any indication of how things will be different around here, they got off 2 hours early to go golfing at Pinehurst, the famous PGA course. One of the dentists at the clinic has a membership at the country club and was able to pull some strings to get everybody on the regularly $100+ course for only $30. Lucky guy!
This weekend we enjoyed lots of rain and wind thanks to Hurrican Irene, but thankfully no power outtages or anything more serious. Luckily we're far enough in from the coast that the worst of it simply didn't reach us. It was one crazy week!!

Glad you are all safe and getting settled. Trevor about died with jealousy when he read over my shoulder where Jon was golfing...maybe we will have to come out and visit you!

I just want to bawl my eyes out right now. Lucy is not suppost to go to school without paisley. She asks about lucy everyday and wants to know if we can just go by your old house and check and when can we visit? its been soooooo long since I've seen my lucy mom. Know that you are missed terribly.

We have worried some about all the weather reports on NC. It was good to be reassured by Jonathan that you were all OK. Lucy is growing up too fast but we know she will love school and probably teach as much as she is being taught. She is a smart little cookie. Your house looks wonderful, glad you are so comfortable. When we were in San Angelo, Texas when Gene was a baby he was nearly eaten alive by the mosquitoes. I had to put net over his crib at nights. Love to all.
Love, Grandma C.

I'm so glad you didn't get the brunt of the storm. Hopefully all your weeks in NC won't be filled with so much excitement!

You've had so many adventures these past few years that it will be fun to reminisce someday and say "Do you remember when?" So glad you were all safe from "Mean Irene" :)

Say what you will about the wild wild west, but it seems pretty safe and tame(most of the time). We don't even seem to have mosquitoes here in Boise. We have to go to the mountains now and then just to look for trouble. But we don't have Pinehurst Golf Club here either. Bummer.

I'm happy you survived both the earthquake and the hurricane - things can only get better from here!! Hal would be envious of Jon's golfing adventure! Lucy's pre-school sounds great - and I would guess there is no politically correct curriculum with the Baptists in charge!

I'm glad you guys are okay after the hurricane! And I know what you mean about the mosquitos. What in the world? We stand outside for 5 minutes and Hailey and I come in with bites! One point for the desert I guess.

Did you guys get the tornado warnings? Teresa said the sirens were going off in Chapel Hill... One thing after another!

Glad you are ok!! Your new house is ah-mazing! I hope things settle down and you will have lots of fun telling Lucy about the differences in our church and the Baptist, Dorothy went to a Lutheran church (which we LOVED) and I had to teach her the first vision story like 10 times because they kept telling her Jesus and God were the same people... but we had a wonderful experience and got to teach her the gospel too!
